What to do after you adopt your first puppy

Choosing the right pup for you and your family is a very important decision. The right puppy can be a loving companion that fits seamlessly into your family circle.

Here at PetVet we want all puppies to go to the right family so they have a forever home. So if you’re thinking of getting a new four pawed family member, PetVet would love to help you. Speak to Rasha and enlist for our “Choose your partner!” program. A vet from our specially trained team will consult with you to understand your lifestyle, household, family members and help you decide which breed would best suit you. We’ll even come with you on the big day to help pick out your healthy puppy. Don’t forget that our Sri Lankan dog breeds make great companions too.

Once you’ve found the right puppy for your family, there are a few more things you need to do;

1. Worming

It is very important to do this early. Intestinal parasites like hookworms can make a puppy very sick or even die.

2. Vaccinations

We follow the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) international guidelines and always use high quality globally recommended vaccines.

Always remember that dosage, type of drug and frequency of drug administration is important and they all vary with age and the weight of the pup. Always consult your vet before you medicate.

3. Tick Control

Tick fever is one of the most common pet illnesses seen in Sri Lanka. So it is important begin tick control as soon as possible and continue regularly throughout the life of your pet.

4. Coat Care & Bathing

Young puppies should be cleaned with a wet towel and given a “sponge bath.” Regular baths start only at about 4 months of age. Be sure to make it a positive and fun experience for both of you. If you aren’t sure how to bathe your puppy we’ll be happy to teach you.

5. Brushing

All dogs and all coat types should be brushed daily. If you start young, they really love this special time with you. Make it a healthy habit.

6. Nutrition

Your pet needs good nutrition just as much as your human family members. Our vets will be happy to talk to you to create a nutrition plan that suits you and your pet so that your pup grows into a strong and healthy adult.

7. Dental Care

You wouldn’t think that your puppy needs dental care. But they do. It’s an often overlooked area but very important to the long-term wellness of your pet.

8. Social Development & Socialization

Socialization is the exposure you give your puppy to the various things that happen in a normal human environment. This will help your puppy better understand and cope with the world they need to fit into with comfort and confidence. PetVet offers special puppy socialization classes to help you and your pet get the best start on your lives together.

9. Training

Training focuses on teaching your dog specific words and associated behaviors. This allows easy communication and understanding between you and your pet. Your puppy will even enjoy learning. It keeps them from getting bored. Remember to always use positive reinforcement and rewards. You can contact us for more information and assistance and we’ll be happy to help you out.

10. Good Citizenship Club

This is a group of people and pets who have completed correct socialization and advanced training. The idea is to create fun activities we that can do together. All puppies who go through are puppy classes and training programs are eligible. Contact us for more information. We also provide this information in PetVet’s first puppy visit consults.
